03 · Knocked-out adult tooth
Act within the hour.
- Hold the tooth by the crown (the white part), never the root.
- If it's dirty, rinse it briefly in milk or cold running water. Don't scrub it.
- If you can, push it gently back into the socket and bite on a clean cloth.
- If not, keep it in milk or in your cheek (not for young children).
- Call us straight away on 020 7946 0716.
Baby teeth should not be put back. Bring your child in to be checked.
04 · While you wait
Easing the pain.
- A pharmacist can advise on suitable painkillers. Always follow the dose on the packet.
- Never put aspirin directly on the gum: it can burn.
- A cold compress on the cheek can help with swelling.
- Lost a crown? Keep it safe and bring it with you.
- Antibiotics don't treat toothache; they're only prescribed when clinically needed.
